In this video, I explain what mind-body syndromes are, and just as importantly, what they are not. This is a topic that is often surrounded by confusion and misunderstanding, which can leave people feeling dismissed, invalidated, or uncertain about what is happening to their bodies.

I explore how very real physical symptoms can develop and persist through changes in the nervous system, even when there is no ongoing tissue damage driving them. We look at the role of the brain and nervous system in symptom generation, and how the body's natural protective mechanisms can sometimes become overactive and continue to produce symptoms long after an initial trigger has passed.

The video also examines why the term mind-body is frequently misunderstood. Having a mind-body syndrome does not mean that symptoms are imaginary, exaggerated, voluntary, or “all in your head.” The symptoms are real, can be highly distressing, and often have a significant impact on daily life.

We also discuss how factors such as stress, emotions, past experiences, trauma, learning, conditioning, and other nervous system processes can influence health and symptom perception, often outside of conscious awareness. Understanding these mechanisms can help make sense of symptoms that may otherwise feel confusing or inexplicable.

Whether you are experiencing persistent symptoms yourself, supporting someone who is, or are simply interested in the science of chronic symptoms and the mind-body connection, this video hopefully, provides a balanced and compassionate introduction to this important topic.
