New YouTube Video! The Lemon Test - How the Brain Creates Real Physical Sensations 🍋

In this video, I use the simple Lemon Test to demonstrate how the brain can create real physical sensations and physiological responses through thoughts, memories, and mental imagery alone. Even imagining something as ordinary as biting into a juicy lemon can cause your mouth to water, your facial muscles to respond, or your body to react as though the lemon were actually present.
I discuss what this simple demonstration can tell us about the relationship between the brain and the body. We often assume that a physical sensation must be caused by something physically happening in the body, but the brain is constantly interpreting information, using memories, expectations, associations, and predictions to influence what we experience physically. The Lemon Test provides an accessible way of experiencing this process for yourself.
Importantly, this does not mean that sensations created or influenced by the brain are imaginary or “all in your head.” The physical response is real. The brain is responsible for generating and regulating much of our conscious physical experience, and it can produce genuine bodily changes in response to what we think, imagine, remember, or anticipate.
The video also explores why this is particularly relevant when trying to understand chronic pain and other persistent physical symptoms. Just as the brain can produce a physical response to an imagined lemon, the brain and nervous system can sometimes generate or maintain real symptoms through learned patterns, predictions, and protective responses - even when there is no ongoing tissue damage that adequately explains the symptoms.
This doesn't mean that every symptom is caused by the brain, nor does it mean that symptoms should be dismissed or assumed to be psychological. Rather, it highlights the complexity of the brain-body relationship and helps explain why real physical symptoms can sometimes occur without ongoing physical damage.
Whether you're living with chronic pain or persistent symptoms yourself, supporting someone who is, or simply interested in understanding how the brain and body interact, I hope this simple demonstration provides a useful way of thinking about the reality of mind-body processes.
🍋 Try the Lemon Test for yourself and notice what happens. :-)
