FAQs

If you're living with chronic illness, long-term health conditions, or persistent pain, coaching can provide education, practical tools, and support to help you navigate the challenges of living with ongoing health concerns. I offer specialized online coaching for people managing the physical, emotional, and practical demands of chronic illness, chronic pain, persistent symptoms, fatigue, and major life transitions. As a deliberately small practice, I'm able to provide a more personal, thoughtful, and unhurried coaching experience. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about chronic illness, pain, and wellness coaching.

1. How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is a forward-focused, collaborative process that helps you develop practical skills, build resilience, and work towards meaningful goals and a better quality of life. It is particularly well suited to helping people navigate the practical and emotional challenges of living with chronic illness, chronic pain, or persistent symptoms.

Psychotherapy and counselling are clinical services that assess and treat mental health conditions and other psychological difficulties. Coaching is different. It does not assess, diagnose, or treat mental health conditions. Instead, it focuses on education, skills development, behaviour change, self-management, and supporting people to cope with the normal emotional challenges, stress, uncertainty, grief, frustration, and life changes that often accompany long-term health conditions.

My coaching is informed by my background in health psychology and behavioural medicine and is delivered entirely within a coaching framework to support resilience, emotional wellbeing, and quality of life. If I believe that you would benefit from psychological therapy or other clinical support, I will discuss this with you and recommend appropriate services.

2. Can coaching help with chronic illness or chronic pain?

Yes. Coaching can help you better understand your condition and symptoms, navigate the emotional and practical challenges of living with chronic illness or chronic pain, develop effective coping and self-management strategies, regulate stress, build resilience, and improve confidence in managing your health. The focus is on helping you adapt, maintain quality of life, and work towards personally meaningful goals, whatever your health circumstances.

3. How can coaching support pain management?

Persistent pain is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, including how the nervous system processes pain. Depending on your circumstances, coaching may also draw on principles from modern pain science, pain reprocessing, and nervous system regulation to help you better understand persistent pain and other symptoms, change your relationship with them, reduce symptom-related fear, build confidence in your body's capacity for change, and support recovery where appropriate.

4. Is coaching only for mental health, or can it help with physical symptoms too?
Coaching cannot cure physical conditions, but it may help reduce the impact of symptoms, including pain, fatigue, dizziness, and flare-ups, by helping the nervous system shift out of stress and into regulation. Coaching can also support emotional balance, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

5. Is online coaching effective for chronic illness and chronic pain management?
Yes. Online coaching is just as effective as in-person sessions. Many people prefer it because fatigue, pain, mobility challenges, and the unpredictability of illness, make travel difficult. It's also a safer option for those who are immunocompromised, or otherwise medically vulnerable, especially during months where viruses are a present danger for that population. Online sessions allow you to access support from home, conserving energy and reducing stress.

6. What kinds of conditions do you support?
I work with a wide range of chronic illnesses and long-term health conditions, including chronic pain syndromes, fibromyalgia, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, long Covid, chronic migraines, neuropathic or neuroplastic pain, chronic fatigue, medically unexplained symptoms, and mind–body syndromes. Coaching can be helpful even when symptoms have a clear physical cause, by managing stress, regulating emotions, and calming nervous system patterns that may amplify pain, fatigue, or the overall impact of illness.

7. Can coaching help if I already have a diagnosis?

Yes. Many of my clients have well-established medical diagnoses. Coaching does not question the reality of your condition or replace medical care. Instead, it focuses on helping you understand how biological, psychological, and social factors interact, while developing practical skills to improve wellbeing, reduce the impact of symptoms, and enhance quality of life.

8. What is Pain Reprocessing and does it work online?

Pain Reprocessing is an evidence-informed approach developed to help people with neuroplastic pain retrain learned pain pathways. Within coaching, I may draw upon pain reprocessing principles and neuroplastic pain retraining strategies, alongside pain education, nervous system regulation, and behaviour change strategies where appropriate.

9. Do I have to talk about trauma for coaching to help?

Not necessarily. Coaching is guided by your goals and what feels helpful and appropriate for you. Some clients explore how long-term stress or past experiences have influenced their current health and wellbeing, while others focus on practical strategies such as symptom management, nervous system regulation, pacing, resilience, and building healthier daily habits.

10. How does chronic illness affect emotional wellbeing?
Living with long-term health problems can lead to anxiety, frustration, grief, uncertainty, isolation, and changes in identity or confidence. Coaching provides space to understand these emotional responses, make sense of your experience, and feel less alone.

11. Are support groups better than coaching?
Support groups can provide understanding, shared experiences, and a sense of community, which reduces isolation. Coaching offers individualized, evidence-based guidance tailored to your unique challenges, emotional patterns, and goals. Many people benefit from combining both, drawing on peer support alongside personalized coaching strategies.

12. How can coaching help with the uncertainty of chronic illness?
Chronic conditions often bring unpredictability. Coaching can teach tools for emotional regulation, improving coping, increasing a sense of control, reducing anxiety, and adjusting to changes in health. Methods such as mindfulness, nervous system regulation, values-based approaches, practical behavioural strategies, and resilience-building skills can help restore stability, confidence, and a greater sense of meaning and purpose.

13. How long does coaching take?
There is no fixed timeline. Some clients need short-term support for a specific challenge, while others benefit from ongoing coaching that matches the long-term nature of their condition.

14. How do I know if coaching is right for me?
If you’re struggling emotionally or physically, feeling overwhelmed, or simply seeking support to navigate your health or situation, coaching may be a good fit. You don’t have to reach a crisis point to benefit.

15. What is a boutique coaching practice, and how does it benefit clients?

A boutique coaching practice is a deliberately small practice that prioritizes quality over quantity. By working with fewer clients, I'm able to offer a more personalized, thoughtful, and unhurried coaching experience. Sessions are tailored to your goals and paced according to your circumstances, allowing time to develop practical skills, reflect on progress, and build lasting change.

16. Where can I learn more about your coaching approach and fees?
